This is because freshwater fish are not so sensitive to water temperature and they are easier to maintain. The temperature of the water with tropical fish is critical to their survival. Another important point is the price is a lot less. With regard to salt water fish there is a much larger choice and they are more colourful but this is not for the inexperienced. It can be a tricky business.

To take a visit to the local pet shop and cast a net into the tank and take a chance on what you come up with is not the way to go about stocking your aquarium. You need to consider the size of the tank and to whether the fish fully grown will out grow the tank. 

 When you are choosing a tank if you have the room the adult size would be a smart move. This is an important decision overcrowded fish are stressed out fish and they will die. Another essential thing to take into consideration is food. Not all fish have the same eating habits. Fish also eat different foods for example. Some fish eat food that is frozen others fresh and many feed on flakes. This can create a time consuming issue to preparing separate portions of food for the fish. Try to choose fish that all eat the same food if time is an issue.
