Stop Dogs Biting - Dog Aggression

How do you stop dogs biting? The primary thing to consider is the type of biting we are referring too.

Dog aggression and puppy aggression are totally different sets of problems with regard to puppy aggression it is not really a major problem if stopped at the early stages however dog aggression presents a new set of problems but still can be overcome with the right formula.

Many folks say there is no substitute for experience There are puppies that love to nip and bite peoples clothes and hands this is quite a normal progression they love to discover the world with their mouths. This is not exclusive to puppies this habit is also happens with mature dogs that have not been trained not to bite or nip. To a dog the use of his mouth is an essential part of his body. In the eyes of the dog it is as important as his eyes or legs.

 Puppy Aggression

Puppy biting and nipping is very common and not to be confused with aggressive biting. Puppies in the early stages of their life are nipping in order to communicate they nip their mothers and the contents of the den or kennel this is not really aggressive biting it would be described as being playful or though a young puppies teeth are razor sharp a nip on your arms of legs can be a little painful but is not malicious as a general rule. Training a puppy not to aggressively bite is a simple task if caught in the early stages.

When puppies are playing among each other they often nip and bite each other. This is quite a positive progression and can be described as a form of education.

For example if a puppy nips another puppy too violently then the reaction of the puppy being nipped will respond with a yelp of pain. This can lead to the guilty puppy being cut off from further play times. A further example if they are the one that has been bitten it teaches them caution when using there mouths.

Why do older dogs nip or bite?

In Daniel Stevens dog behavior training course one of is hot tips is why older dogs nip or bite is they were taken away for the litter to soon and not have time to learn these essential lessons as explained above however there are many other reasons.

When an older dog bites aggressive playing is another reason. If you play with your dog in an aggressive way he will respond and that can often lead to serious biting disorders. In order to stop dogs biting be more sensitive to the way you play with your dog.

What starts out as an inoffensive play session ends up being a very unpleasant experience. A puppy can not inflect any serious damage because their jaws are lacking in strength. But a more mature dog can do some serious damage.

So how we stop dogs biting?

In order to stop dogs biting a smart move would be to teach your dog a technique described as bite inhabitation. This technique can be used with young and old dogs alike. With older dogs it can be a longer process.

During play periods you have to educate your dog to the amount of pressure he is allowed to put on your hands. This is a personal choice to whether he is allowed to use his teeth with little or no pressure. In the case of larger dogs with stronger jaws then the best option would be no pressure at all.

So at what point do you let the dog know he has gone too far?

When he gives you a nip or a bite on your hand grab him by the jaws and make a very loud noise and turn away from him. The lesson here is not to give him any attention for the next couple of minutes this way he will learn the lesson fast. This is just one technique to stop dogs biting.
