When you first have your dog as a puppy it is quite a common practice not to stop dog jumping up on you. At the puppy stage you have often have to bend over in order to pay attention to your new found friend. By showing affection to him he automatically thinks it's okay to jump up. He really wouldn't know the difference between jumping up in the puppy stages to when he is fully grown. This is the point you have to gain control over your dog and make him understand that jumping is not acceptable.

When is jumping acceptable?

Fortunately we are not all the same and some dog owners love their dogs to jump up. If this is the case no need to be concerned. But a word of caution if your dog jumps up on you and your okay with that then he will probably jump up on your friends and that may not go down very well. If you are an owner a small dog then this is not much of an issue but if you own a Great Dane then these dogs can be very dangerous in the jumping mood.

So how do you stop dog jumping up on your guests? If you own a big dog the essential commands of off and no jump will be very effective. The main reasons dogs jump they are excited especially with a new face they instinctively know they are going to get a lot of attention.

A word of caution dogs do not always jump up for attention. In some cases it may be to create dominance over another dog. This can also happen with humans. We must remember dogs are pack animals and it is natural for them to create a presence. It is important to be able to recognize the difference between the two.
