If you collected your puppy
in the car then make sure as soon as the new found friend
has been in the home for a few minutes introduce him or
her to the garden and try to get him to do his first
helping of toilet there. Pick the dog up gently and place
him in the garden in the location you are comfortable for
him to relieve himself. Don’t place him in the games part
of the garden or you will have trouble breaking the dog of
that habit relieving him-self in the
future
After the car journey the dog will more than likely be wanting
go to the toilet. Start as you mean to go on. If his first
visit to the toilet happens to be in the kitchen he may get
into the habit of thinking that’s okay to off load there in the
future where as if it is in the garden that will set the
scene.
Dogs are strange animals they like to sniff around before they
off load. Patience is important try not to lose it how ever
much you want that cup of tea after your journey.
The sniffing is part of the process establishing a territory
for future droppings. At this point try to be oblivious to what
you are witnessing. Once the event is complete be sure to
reward and praise the dog. This will encourage the dog to
repeat the event in a similar place the next
time.
When you are communicating with your dog make sure your tone of
voice is consistent with the command you make every time. For
example if you want your dog to go to the toilet say go pee or
potty time which ever suits you best. Try to use the same
volume in your voice each time. This way the dog will
understand. When you are learning to house train a dog you will
find that dogs are very sensitive to different
sounds.
