The size of the crate is depending on the breed of dog. A good guide line is the dog has to be able to stand up and stretch out. If the crate is any bigger then it will defeat the object. 

A crate is like a house but only smaller you have to get the dog to ask to come out of the crate to go to the toilet and get him into the habit.
