House training a dog is one of the primary things to get started
with when you add a new puppy to your family its an exciting time however dog house
training is a must unless you want your house to smell like a garbage bin.
With
regard to house training dogs there are lots of different options for example dog potty training, paper training your puppy, many people choose
the route of crate training in fact there are many dog house training aids available however its a matter of personal choice and
what suits your particular situation the best way to get started is try something for
free.
How
to Potty Train a Dog
How to potty train a
dog can be a frustrating experience if you don't no how and many people
struggle with this mainly because they don't get started right away and this is so........
important.
If you collected your puppy in the car then
make sure as soon as the new found friend has been in the home for a few minutes introduce him or
her to the garden and try to get him to do his first helping of toilet there. Pick the dog up
gently and place him in the garden in the location you are comfortable for him to relieve himself.
Don’t place him in the games part of the garden or you will have trouble breaking the dog of that
habit relieving him-self in the future
After
the car journey the dog will more than likely be wanting go to the toilet. Start as you mean to go
on. If his first visit to the toilet happens to be in the kitchen he may get into the habit of
thinking that’s okay to off load there in the future where as if it is in the garden that will set
the scene.
Dogs
are strange animals they like to sniff around before they off load. Patience is important try not
to lose it how ever much you want that cup of tea after your journey
The
sniffing is part of the process establishing a territory for future droppings. At this point try
to be oblivious to what you are witnessing. Once the event is complete be sure to reward and
praise the dog. This will encourage the dog to repeat the event in a similar place the next
time.
When
you are communicating with your dog make sure your tone of voice is consistent with the command
you make every time. For example if you want your dog to go to the toilet say go pee or potty
time which ever suits you best. Try to use the same volume in your voice each time. This way the
dog will understand don't make the mistake of thinking of you dog as a animal they are just like
us very sensitive and eager to please.
House
training your dog is an art you will find that dogs are very sensitive to different
sounds so try to be consistent with the volume of your voice its not that hard and
stay positive throughout and you will have dog to be proud of.
Always
think of the end result by your attitude alone the dog will pick up on this. With
regard to house training older dogs will depend on the last owner or whether they have
been ill treated and ended up back in the kennels in these cases even more patience is
required however this still is very achievable it takes a little more time but adult
dog house training is still just as much fun as a puppy providing you have the right frame of
mind.
Another
aspect of house training for dogs which many people are not aware of is scent
marking this is a term that top professionals use. Scent marking is when a dog tries to
establish his or her territory in a home or garden they do this by the use of their ruing in
selected places.
Even
the most highly trained dog will do this from time to time. It does not come under
the cat orgy of a dog house training problems however since we are dealing with a urine
problem it does come under the label of house training a dog. First and foremost we have to
establish the difference between a dog that is house trained and scent marking.
So what is Scent marking?
When
a dog is scent marking the dog is only releasing a small amount of urine. This practice is not
described as going to the toilet more of a dog dribble.
The
selected place in general are on doors or walls. Male dogs that have been neutered around six to
nine months old are more likely to perform scent marking. The reason is a dog that has not been
neutered is more likely to want to establish his territory.
This
can also happen with female dogs that are not spayed. What is to be understood is he is not
really relieving himself so by taking him outside to perform a toilet will not solve the
problem. The main place he will scent mark is fresh items that turn up in the house such as
clothing or shoes when the come to visit. A further reason is if there is more than one dog in
the house and don't always agree with each other.
If
the dog as fallen into this habit of scent marking for longer than a year he may be harder to
break the habit even if the dog has been neutered. Then next you need to do is to clean the
areas where your dog has scent marked.
You
need to purchases something from the pet food store that will remove the stain and the odours.
Dogs have a tendency to scent mark the same places a second time or even a third
time.
The
way to deal with this is to feed him on the same spot he has marked put his bed next to the
spot. You will need to spend time in the place yourself maybe just sit around and read a book
there. These are just few dog house training tips you can apply straight away to resolve the problem of
scent marking. When you are training a dog there is so much to learn if you want to some
dedicated dog owners even attend dog training seminars however that is not a necessary is it not
possible for you.
