First and foremost we have to establish the difference between a dog that is house trained  and scent marking. When a dog is scent marking the dog is only releasing a small amount of urine. This practice is not described as going to the toilet more of a dribble. The selected places are on doors and walls. Male dogs that have not been neutered around six to nine months old are more likely to perform scent marking. The reason is a dog that has not been neutered is more likely to want to establish his territory. This can also happen with female dogs that are not spayed. What is to be understood is he is not really relieving his self so by taking him outside to perform a toilet will not solve the problem. The main place he will scent mark is fresh items that turn up in the house such as clothing or shoes of your friends that come to stay.

A further reason is if there is more than one dog residing in the household and they don’t always agree with each other

So what house train dog techniques do we need to apply in order to resolve this problem?

If your dog is not been neutered or spayed you will have to act on this as soon as possible. If this is approached in the early stages of the dogs life for example in the first seven to eight months this could eliminate the problem in a very short space of time.

If the dog as fallen into this habit of scent marking for longer than a year he may be harder to break the habit even if the dog has been neutered. Then next you need to do is to clean the areas where your dog has scent marked. You need to purchases something from the pet food store that will remove the stain and the odours. Dogs have a tendency to scent mark the same places a second time or even a third time. The way to deal with this is to feed him on the same spot he has marked put his bed next to the spot. You will need to spend time in the place yourself maybe just sit around and read a book there. These are just few how to house train dog techniques you can apply to resolve the problem of scent marking.
